  Frequently asked questions

1.) ShareISDN doesn't work. But I don't get any error message.

Check the LogFile of the ShareISDN Server to get additional information. To do so, press the "Error Log" button in the Control Panel Applet of the ShareISDN Server and Client.

Version 1.2.6 or later:
Press the button "Error Log" in the Control Panel of the ShareISDN Server.
Version 1.2.4/5:
Check the EventLog of the ShareISDN Server to get additional information. To do so, open "LogFile" under "Start/Programs/ShareISDN Server" (Windows2000: System protocol).
Version 1.2.3 or earlier:
Depending on the operating system of the Server,
- open the Event Log (Start Menue/Programs/Administrative/Tools/EventLog), and choose the section "application" from the protocol menue (for WindowsNT)
- open the Event Log (Start-Menue / Settings / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Event Log) and choose "application protocol" (for Windows2000).
- locate the file "ShareISDNServer.log" with the Search-function of Windows and open it with a text editor (for Windows95/98/MI).

2.) I use dynamic IP adresses. Sometimes some of my clients are rejected. They can connect again only after restarting the server.

The ShareISDN Server resolves the names of allowed clients once while it is started. If the IP address of a client changes after that, the ShareISDN Server will not notice that. Make sure that your client machines always get the same IP numbers or activate the "All clients are accepted" checkbox in the Control Panel of the Server.

3.) I got the error "Couldn't resolve client name.".

You have entered one or more names of client computers in the ShareISDN server control panel. These names couldn't be converted into IP-Numbers. Better use IP-Numbers instead of names.

4.) Can I install both the ShareISDN Server and an ISDN application on one computer?

Yes.

5.) Can I install both the ShareISDN Client and an ISDN card on one computer?

There can be only one CAPI interface in the system. Both the Client and the ISDN card will try to install a file called "capi2032.dll" into the System/System32 folder. If you keep a copy of that two versions, you can switch between the Client and the card by replacing the file. You can also put one version into the application folder of an ISDN application and leave the other in the System/System32 folder.

6.) Can I use PPP channel bundling for Internet connections?

No.

7.) I got the error "Couldn't bind to PPTP network socket.".

Another application is already waiting for PPTP connections, probably to build up a VPN network. We use PPTP connections for RAS support, so you currently cannot run the ShareISDN server and a "real" VPN network at the same time. You should disable the RAS support (see FAQ No. 11, "DisablePPTP").
This problem may especially occur in combination with the "Routing and RAS service".

8.) My ShareISDN Server runs with ISDN applications, but I can't build up an Internet connection.

Unfortunately the PPTP/VPN driver from Microsoft doesn't report detailed error messages. You should check the Event Log of the server first. If there are no errors or warnings, you should check the IP-Number/Name of the ShareISDN Server you have entered into the Dialup-Networking/RAS. Have you entered the following instead of the phone number?

"<Ip-Number> <phone number>"

Have you forgotten the space between the two numbers?

All other settings are Provider dependend. The best way to check these settings is to install the Dialup-Networking/RAS on the computer with the ISDN card and check if you can build up Internet connections directly without ShareISDN.

ShareISDN Server on Windows95: Perhaps you have forgotten the Winsock2 Update?

ShareISDN Client on Windows2000: Choose "Point-to-Point-Tunneling-Protocol(PPTP)" for the VPN Server type (file card "Network"). On the file card "Security" choose "Advanced Security settings" and activate the protocol "PAP", if your Internet service provider requires it.

9.) The ShareISDN Server produces a very high processor load.

Check the Event Log of the server. If you find a message "Please update your ISDN Card Driver", the Data signalling function of your ISDN card driver isn't working correctly. Check the website of the manufacturer to see if there is a new driver.

10.) Is ShareISDN compatible with Windows 2003 Server?

Yes. Windows 2003 Server is based on Windows XP.

11.) Why are there no start scripts available for Linux?

There are several different Linux distributions. Most of them have completely different ways to start their applications and services at boot time.

12.) I have got a firewall between the Client and the Server. Which ports do I have to allow?

First of all the port you have set in the control panels of the Clients and Server (Default: 6500). For the RAS support, it isn't that easy. The RAS support is realized by a VPN/PPTP connection. First you have to allow port 1723. Additionally you have to allow a special type of packet, which is called "Type 47" or "Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE)".
Unfortunatelly we cannot provide you with further instructions on how to setup your firewall.

13.) I'm not sure if my ISDN application "XYZ" uses ShareISDN/the Capi interface at all. How can I check that quickly?

Enter an incorrect IP number into the Control Panel of the ShareISDN Client. Start your application and check the Error Log of the ShareISDN Client. If the application uses the Client, there should be an error message that the Client couldn't find the Server.

14.) I have upgraded my T-Online Software to Version 4.0. It doesn't seem to work with ShareISDN.

Simply open the Control Panel "ShareISDN Client" and press the "Cancel"-Button. ShareISDN will detect the new version and add its settings.
Attention: From now on, ShareISDN will not update its settings for the old T-Online Software Version 3.0, if it is still installed.

15.) I would like to use the T-Online Software on a Windows 2000 System. How do I do that?

Install the T-Online Software. The "Zugangsart ..." should be "LAN". Configure a RAS connection using ShareISDN (see "Installation & Configuration to access the Internet" in the file "Readme.txt"). First build up an Internet connection with RAS, and then launch your T-Online Software.

16.) I'm familiar with the Registry. Are there any Registry Keys I can modify?

Yes. You will find the following keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Active Elements \ ShareISDN \ Server":

PptpMSN
Own phone number (MSN) for RAS connections.

EchoRequestTimeout
Time of inactivity in seconds the server will wait for Echo Request packets from the client. After that period of time, the server will assume that the connection to the client isn't alive anymore, and will disconnect all pending ISDN lines of the client. Set this to "0" to turn this feature off.

DisablePPTP
With this key set to "1" you can turn off the RAS support. This might be useful if you run an own PPTP Dial-In Server on the same machine, and the RAS support of ShareISDN interferes with it.

ConsLogSize
With this key, you can define the maximum size (in kB) of the connection logging file. The default is 400 kB. Using "0" will disable connection logging.

LogFileSize
With this key, you can define the maximum size (in kB) of the LogFile. The default is 400 kB. Using "0" will disable the LogFile.

You will find the following keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Active Elements \ ShareISDN \ Client":

NoMessageBox
With this key set to "1" you can turn off all Message Boxes. Be aware that from now on ShareISDN cannot inform you about problems, except you look into the log file.

EchoRequest
Time of inactivity in seconds after which the client will try to send an Echo Request packet to the server. Set this to "0" to turn this feature off.

EchoReplyTimeout
Time in seconds after which the client must have received a reply to an Echo Request from the server. After that period of time, the client will assume that the connection to the server isn't alive anymore, and will return all pending CAPI calls with the error code "NO_CAPI". Set this to "0" to turn this feature off.

LogFileSize
With this key, you can define the maximum size (in kB) of the LogFile. The default is 400 kB. Using "0" will disable the LogFile.

17.) I got the error "There is something wrong with your TCP/IP-settings.".

Update your ShareISDN Server to the newest version (recommended) or enable DNS on your system.

18.) I have installed the ISDN package "FRITZ!" from AVM on the server. Now my clients cannot connect to it anymore.

This problem has been fixed in V1.2.5 and above. Please update your ShareISDN version.
